An Interesting Exercise

California is facing a $24 Billion dollar deficit, and everyone is trying to figure out how to pay for it since the voters rejected the tax increase pushed by the Democratic Majority. The LA Times has an interactive site where you can try your hand at balancing the budget. Give it a try.

There weren’t enough categories for cuts. In California when there’s a car accident anywhere from 50 to 100 "emergency" workers show up. There’s local and state cops, firemen, EMTs, Hazmat crews, highway dept. workers, etc. It’s a mob scene of over-paid government workers mostly standing around doing nothing. I didn’t see any way to cut those people from the budget...

True, the selection of items to delete were selected by the editors of the paper and did not include all services. But if you are a minimalist in regards to government, it really wasn't that hard to balance the budget. The fight is really with those who think government can't do enough for us versus those who think that we should do it ourselves.
